Ingredients

  • White bread4 slices
  • Butter40 g
  • Shredded cheese (mozzarella or cheddar)150 g

Instructions

  1. 1

Butter one side of every bread slice, all the way to the edges. The buttered sides will face outward - they become the crispy crust.

  2. 2

Lay cheese evenly between two slices, buttered sides facing out. Assemble both sandwiches.

Tip: Do not overstuff - about 1 cm of cheese melts evenly; more just leaks out.

  3. 3

Place the sandwiches in a pan over medium-low heat. Cook 3-4 minutes until the bottom is deep golden brown.

Tip: Low heat is everything: it gives the cheese time to melt before the bread burns.

  4. 4

Flip with a spatula, press gently, and cook 2-3 more minutes until the second side is golden and the cheese is fully melted.

Tip: Bread done but cheese not melted? Cover the pan with a lid for 30 seconds.

  5. 5

Rest 1 minute on a cutting board, then cut diagonally and serve warm.

Cooking methods

On the stove

Heavy or non-stick pan on a low gas flame. If the bread darkens too fast, lift the pan off the flame for a few seconds.

On induction

Level 4. Induction’s even base heat browns the bread uniformly - both sandwiches will look identical.

Over an open fire

Cast iron pan over medium coals. Watch closely - buttered bread chars quickly. The smoky note is excellent with melted cheese.
